Joseph Brown was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, and attested there for the Lancashire Fusiliers. He served with the 18th Battalion during the Great War, and was awarded the Military Medal for his gallantry at the Battle of Courtrai, October 1918 (The History of the Lancashire Fusiliers 1914-18 refers). He was killed in action on the Western Front on 31 October 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
