Herbert Cottee was born on 19 November 1880 and commissioned into the Royal Field Artillery as Second Lieutenant in April 1915. Appointed Acting Major, he held the command of ‘C’ Battery, 168th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery on the Western Front towards the end of 1916, and, having been twice mentioned in Despatches, was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1917, whilst still a substantial Second Lieutenant. He relinquished his commission on 17 October 1920, and was granted the honorary rank of Major.

Sold together with the Bestowal Document for the D.S.O, named to Second Lieutenant (acting Major) H. Cottee, Royal Artillery, and dated 4 June 1917, together with a copy of the Statutes of the Order; two Mentioned in Despatches Certificates, dated 13 November 1916 and 9 April 1917, both in named War Office envelopes; a portrait postcard of the recipient; and various copied research including War Diary extracts.
