WARWICKSHIRE, Birmingham, Icknield Street Board School, Edward Fordham Flower Prize, a silver Prize for Kindness to Animals, unsigned, legend in wreath both sides, named (Stephen Harry Ford, 1889), 64mm, 97.27g. Good very fine, toned £60-80

The school was designed in 1883 by I.H. Chamberlain of Martin & Chamberlain, principal architects for the Birmingham School Board. Edward Fordham Flower (1805-83), b. Marden Hill, Herts., author, brewer, banker and agriculturist, spent some of his formative years in Illinois, USA, but returned to the UK in 1824. He founded a brewery in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1832 and was the town’s mayor four times, the last of which coincided with the Shakespeare tercentenary in 1864. Retiring to London in 1873 he was known as ‘the horse’s friend’ and endeavoured to mitigate the sufferings of horses, caused by the use of improper harness, tight bearing-reins and gag-bits
