Roman Imperial Coinage, Ælius (Cæsar), Sestertius, Rome, 136-8, bust right, l aelivs caesar, rev. tr pot cos ii, Concordia seated left on throne, holding patera and cornucopiæ set on altar, s c in field, concord in exergue, 27.80g (RIC Hadrian 1058; C 15; Sear 3980). Slight marks in obverse field, otherwise good very fine, brown patina £600-800

Born Lucius Celonius Commodus, Lucius Ælius was the adopted son and intended heir of Hadrian. However he died on 1 January 138 at the age of 36, predeceasing the emperor by 7 months
