Born in 15 BC, Germanicus was the son of Nero Claudius Drusus and nephew of the emperor Tiberius. The latter adopted him as his son and heir, c. 4 AD. After several brilliant military campaigns, he died in Antioch in 19 from a mystery illness. Some theories implicate Tiberius himself in his nephew’s death. Tacitus, for one, believed he was jealous of the younger man’s growing success and popularity and fearful of his military prowess
