British War Medal 1914-20 (M.6207 T. J. Thomas. N1. Schlmr. R.N.) in named card box of issue; Victory Medal 1914-19 (26412 Pte. H. R. Thomas. S. Wales Bord.) extremely fine, first scarce to rate (2) £140-180

Thomas John Thomas, of Bangor, Carnarvonshire, served during the Great War as a Naval Schoolmaster in the Royal Navy in H.M.S. Defence, and was killed in action at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916, when the Defence was struck by two German salvoes that detonated her rear magazine; the ensuing fire spread to the ship’s secondary magazines which exploded in time, and she sank with the loss of all hands. Thomas is commemorated along with the rest of the crew on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
