Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 5 clasps, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Diamond Hill, Belfast (2794 Pte J. Cartwright, York: Regt.) polished, good very fine £120-160

James Cartwright was born in Middlesbrough in 1870, and attested for the Yorkshire Regiment on 18 January 1889, having previously served with the 3rd (Militia) Battalion. He served with both 1st and 2nd Battalions, before transferring to the Army Reserve in January 1897. Recalled to the Colours on the outbreak of the Boer War, he was posted to the 1st Battalion Yorkshire Regiment and served in South Africa, being present at the five major actions represented by the clasps to his Queen’s South Africa Medal, and was additionally entitled to the South Africa 1901 clasp. He was discharged, time expired, on 17 January 1902, having completed 13 years’ service, both at home and in India, Bermuda, and South Africa.
