Major F. Beckford Middleton commanded the wing of the 21st Madras Native Infantry in the Dera Ghazi Column Thal Chotiali Field Force and the Vitakri Field Force throughout the period that it was employed in the war, February to December 1879. During the latter part of its service, the regiment, in common with the other troops at Vitakri, suffered much from the severe outbreak of scurvy which visited the Force in the autumn of 1879.
