John Roberts was born in Festiniog, Merionethshire, in 1864, and attested for the Royal Welsh Fusiliers at Carnarvon on 29 December 1885. He served with the Regiment in India from 24 December 1886 until 23 January 1894, and took part in the Hazara Expedition of 1891. Promoted Corporal on 12 January 1892, he transferred to the Army Reserve on 1 February 1894, and was discharged on 28 December 1897, after 12 years’ service.
