George Augustus Vernon Welch was born in 1827 and appointed Assistant Paymaster in the Royal Navy on 28 February 1848; Paymaster, 29 September 1855; retired Fleet Paymaster, 17 February 1886. Served in South Africa aboard H.M.S. Castor.
