William Fraser Stephnes was appointed Cornet in the 5th Bengal Light Cavalry on 1 January 1844; Lieutenant, 4 June 1848; Captain, 31 December 1854; Major, 1 January 1862; Lieutenant-Colonel, 16 July 1864; Colonel, 1 January 1875. Served in the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46 and was present at the battle of Moodkee on Escort duty with the Commander in Chief; in command of all the cavalry detachments posted between Moodkee and Ferozeshuhur, 20th, 21st and 22nd December; charger shot under him (Medal and Clasp). He went to Australia on Medical Certificate for 2 years from 10 October 1863.
