Joseph Elliot served as a Private, Royal Marines, in H.M.S. Britannia during the Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805. The Britannia, 100 guns, commanded by Rear-Admiral the Earl of Northesk, was believed to be the oldest ship engaged in the Battle. She was the fourth ship in the Weather Line and was early into action, sustaining a loss of 52 killed and wounded.
