Newton Webb-Bowen was born in London on 15 February 1928, the son of Air Vice Marshal Sir Tom Webb-Bowen. He was educated at Wellington College, and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and was called up for National Service in 1948. He was awarded the Sword of Honour at Sandhurst in July 1948. Commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Welsh Guards on 20 August 1948, he took part in the first Trooping the Colour since the Second World War on 9 June 1949, where he bore the Regiment’s new Colour presented by H.M. King George VI.

Promoted Lieutenant on 15 July 1950, and Captain on 15 July 1951, he saw active service in the Canal Zone, Egypt, between December 1952 and February 1955, whilst serving as Adjutant of the Regiment, before attending Staff College in 1959. Promoted Major on 15 July 1961, he saw active service in Aden between October 1965 to 1966, as Second in Command, and was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel and appointed Commanding Officer of the Welsh Guards on 30 June 1968. During the period of his command the Regiment was involved in Ceremonial Duties, based at Wellington Barracks, before taking part in a N.A.T.O. exercise in Texas. Webb-Bowen retired in September 1972, and died at home in the New Forest on 20 December 2002.
