Charles Gately was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Lancashire Regiment on 1 August 1952, and served with them in Malaya and the Arabian Peninsular. Advanced to Captain, he was seconded to the Malayan Armed Forces and served in operations in Penang prior to assuming an Instructor appointment at A.F.S.I. Promoted Major on 1 August 1965, Gately retired on 22 December 1973.

Sold together with the recipient’s Commission Certificate, dated 23 September 1952, and two letters regarding the award of the Malaysian Active Service Medal.
