Four: Major S. J. M. Gregory, Royal Army Ordnance Corps

Burma Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45; General Service 1918-1962, 1 clasp, Malaya, G.VI.R. (Major. A. [sic] J. M. Gregory. R.A.O.C.) mounted as worn, ‘O’ in unit officially corrected, nearly extremely fine (4) £80-120

Samuel James Morley Gregory was commissioned Second Lieutenant on 24 September 1942, and was promoted Lieutenant on 1 October 1945 and Captain, 1 January 1947. He took up a short service commission in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps on 10 November 1952 from the active list, retaining his seniority, and was promoted Major on 19 June 1961.

Major Gregory was an unwitting victim of a 'car scam' in Hong Kong in late 1948 and was acquitted of charges of corruption. Whilst serving as Ordnance Officer, in charge of 233 Base Ordnance Depot, Hong Kong, he bought, with $1,000 cash, a car from Tan Peng Yew who had 'agreed to buy' the car for $2,200 from the Cycle and Carriage Company but without having paid for it. Straits Times refers).
