Frederick John Young was born on 8 December 1924, at Roma, Queensland, and joined the R.A.N.R. on 12 November 1942. He was assigned to H.M.A.S. Manoora, a L.S.I. (large) and served in her from 5 March 1943 to 3 April 1946, taking part in assault landings at Milne Bay, August 1943; Tanahmerah Bay, April 1944; Wadke Islands, May 1944; Morotai, 15 September 1944; Leyte, October 1944; Lingayen, January 1945; Tarakan, May 1945; Brunei, June 1945; and Balikpapan, July 1945.
H.M.A.S. Manoora was launched in 1934 and hired by the R.A.N. as an Armed Merchant Cruiser on 14 October 1939. From February 1943 she operated as a Landing Ship, Infantry, armed with one 12-pounder and six 40mm guns. She survived the war in the Pacific and was returned to her previous owners in 1946.
