James Edgar Coote was born in Little Bardfield, Essex, in 1895, and attested for the Middlesex Regiment at Great Bardfield, Essex. Posted to the 18th (1st Public Works Pioneers) Battalion, he served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 3 November 1916, before transferring to the 24th (2nd Sportsman’s) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers on 20 November of that year. He was wounded during retaliatory shell-fire following a British gas shelling bombardment, on 6 July 1917, and died of his wounds two days later, on 8 July 1917, at 7th General Hospital, France. He is buried in Longuenesse Cemetery, St Omer, France, and is also commemorated on the Great Bardfield War Memorial.
