George Bernard Coates was born in Hull, Yorkshire, and attested for the Australian Imperial Forces at South Melbourne, Victoria. He served during the Great War with the 5th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force, and was killed in action at Gallipoli on 9 August 1915, having previously been wounded in the left arm on 26 April 1915. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Turkey.

Ernest Wales was born in York, and attested for the Australian Imperial Forces at Claremont, Tasmania, on 18 August 1915. He served during the Great War with No. 6 Brigade, Australian Field Artillery, Australian Imperial Force, and was killed in action on the Western Front on 10 June 1917. He is buried in London Rifle Brigade Cemetery, Belgium.
