G. W. Benson was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the West Riding Regiment on 20 November 1914, and served during the Great War with the 4th (Territorial) Battalion. Promoted Captain on 27 June 1916, he was appointed a Flying Officer, Military Wing Aeroplane, on 16 January 1917.
