John Edward Hannan was born in Manchester, in April 1891, and attested for the Royal Marine Light Infantry at the city of his birth, in July 1908. His service during the Great War included with H.M.C.S. Niobe, August 1914 - September 1915, during which period she was employed as part of the 4th Cruiser Squadron on the North America and West Indies station. Hannan also served with H.M.S. Revenge, February 1916 - June 1917, during which time she was present at the Battle of Jutland as part of the 1st Battle Squadron - and was considerably engaged, including scoring five hits on SMS Derfflinger.

Hannan served the remainder of the war as part of the Royal Marine Brigade at H.M.S. Victory. Post war service included with H.M. ships Indus, Revenge and Emerald (awarded L.S. & G.C. 17 February 1930). He was discharged 17 April 1930, only to re-enlist in the Royal Marine Police, 19 November 1931. He does not appear on Douglas-Morris’ published partial roll of RN and RM L.S. & G.C. Medal and Bar recipients, and Hannan’s service papers do not go beyond 1931, as such the Second Award Bar is unconfirmed.
