William O’Brien was born in Clonakilty, Cork, in May 1898. He joined the Royal Navy as Boy 2nd Class in March 1915. He advanced to Petty Officer in September 1927, and Chief Petty Officer in August 1936. He served at H.M.S. Cochrane during the Second War. O’Brien was invalided out service in July 1954.

O’Brien was awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., 6 July 1931, and the Second Award Bar, 27 July 1953.
