William Clelland Lumley was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 8 August 1895, and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 15 August 1913. Transferring to H.M.S. Prince of Wales on 10 December 1913, he served in her during the Great War, and was advanced to Leading Stoker on 21 November 1916. He was awarded his Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 11 October 1928, and was advanced to Stoker Petty Officer prior to service during the Second World War.

Victor Charles Amos Jarrett was born in Boston, Lincolnshire, on 27 November 1892, and joined the Royal Navy as a Sick Berth Attendant on 9 October 1911. He served during the Great War at the Royal Naval Hospital, Chatham, and was advanced 2nd Sick Berth Steward on 1 March 1916, and Sick Berth Petty Officer on 23 August 1924. He was awarded his Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 26 October 1926, and was advanced to Sick Berth Chief Petty Officer prior to his discharge.
