Three: Private D. Potter, Essex Regiment, killed in action at Le Gheer, 22 January 1915

Daniel Potter was born in 1894, in Great Horkesley, Essex, and attested for the Essex Regiment at Colchester. He served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 22 August 1914. He was killed in action at Le Gheer on 22 January 1915, and is buried in Calvaire (Essex) Military Cemetery, Belgium. He is also commemorated on the Little Horkersley War Memorial and St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Little Horkersley.

The Battalion War Diary for the day notes ‘1 killed and 2 wounded’. The Battalion was in the lines near Ploegsteert and in January 1915 took many casualties from sniping.
