Walter Whitlestone was born in Barnsley, Yorkshire, and attested for the West Yorkshire Regiment at Pontefract, Yorkshire. He served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 2 November 1914, and was killed in action on 29 January 1915. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
