Edred Buckingham was born in Launceston, Cornwall, on 1 August 1876, and joined the Royal Navy as an Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 1 March 1898. Posted to H.M.S. Indefatigable on 24 February 1911, he was advanced to Chief Engine Room Artificer 2nd Class on 1 May 1911, and was awarded his Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 27 March 1913. Transferring for service in H.M.S. Nottingham on 3 April 1914, he was promoted Chief Engine Room Artificer 1st Class on 29 April 1916, and was present at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916. He was killed in action on 19 August 1916, when the Nottingham was torpedoed in the North Sea by the German U-boat U-52, sinking with the loss of 38 crew, and is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
