George Alfred Pennifold was a native of Brighton, and was born in October 1891. He joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve as Ordinary Seaman, in May 1911. He was mobilised for service with the Royal Naval Division, and joined Howe Battalion, 22 August 1914. Subsequent service included with H.M.S. Queen Elisabeth (battleship), December 1914 - August 1917, during which time she became flagship for the preliminary naval operations for the Dardanelles campaign.

Pennifold was awarded the R.N.V.R. L.S. & G.C., 4 May 1920, and the Second Award Bar 3 April 1929.
