Four: Private A. Forbes, Royal Highlanders

Alexander Forbes was born in Whitecairns, Aberdeen, in 1882, and attested in the Dragoons of the Line on 30 January 1900. He transferred to the Black Watch on 31 January 1900 and served during the Boer War with the 2nd Battalion from September 1901 until 22 October 1902. He then served in India to January 1908 before transferring to the Army Reserve later that year. Mobilized on 5 August 1914 on the outbreak of the Great War, he served with the 1st Battalion Royal Highlanders on the Western Front from 30 August 1914 to 14 November 1914 when posted to the Depot and 11th Battalion. He re-joined the 1st Battalion in the field on 25 August 1915 and was promoted Sergeant in October 1915. He was posted to the Depot in September 1916 and discharged from the 3rd Battalion Royal Highlanders on 26 February 1917 due to sickness (awarded Silver War Badge). In civilian life he was employed as a railway policeman, and he died in Edinburgh on 10 December 1961.
