W. Johnstone (erroneously listed as ‘Johnston’ on published transcription of casualty roll) was born in Dumfries, Scotland, and attested for the Scots Guards at Glasgow, in July 1894. He served with the 1st Battalion during the Second Boer War, and was wounded in action at Belfast, 26 August 1900. He was discharged 9 July 1906, having served 12 years with the Colours.
