Robert Charles Penn was born in Bicester, Oxfordshire, and attested for the Coldstream Guards at London in December 1897. He served with the Regiment in South Africa, October 1899 - July 1902, and was discharged 6 December 1909. In later life he was employed as the Commissionaire for the Palace Cinema in High Wycombe.

Sold with two portrait photographs of the recipient, one in uniform, and a Boer War commemorative handkerchief.
