John Moffat was born in Philipston, Linlithgow, and attested for the Scottish Horse (Imperial Yeomanry) in Edinburgh in June 1901, having previously served in the Royal Scots. He served with them in South Africa, before being discharged in September 1902. On the outbreak of the Great War he re-attested at Leith in the 5th Dragoon Guards on 8 September 1914 and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 13 November 1914. He is noted as being hospitalised for 4 days in April 1915 with bronchitis caused by exposure and posted to Reserve Regiment of Cavalry in May 1915. He fractured his left tibula on duty in December 1915 requiring plaster cast, recovering in March 1916, after 79 days in hospital. On 14 September 1916, Moffat was posted back to 5th Dragoon Guards in France and on 22 November 1917 was hospitalised with a septic buttock and invalided to England on the S.S. Grantully Castle. He was posted to West Cavalry Depot on 2 December 1917 and was in 2nd Western General Hospital, Manchester, from December 1917 to March 1918. Posted to 4th Reserve Regiment of Dragoons in April 1918, he transferred to the Labour Corps in the same month and was discharged on 25 February 1919 with bronchitis.
