George Whittaker was awarded his Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society Medal in silver, ‘for gallantry in rescuing a man pinned down in Workington dock owing to a crane accident on 1st June 1910. Unfortunately the rescued man succumbed in consequence of his injuries shortly afterwards.’ (Royal Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society Annual Report 1911 refers).
