Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue, small letter reverse (897 Pte. E. Gowry. 17th. Lancers.) officially re-engraved naming, contact marks, nearly very fine £60-80

Edward Gowry was born in Overstone, Northamptonshire, in 1846 and attested for the 17th Lancers at Northampton on 27 December 1865, having previously served in the Northampton and Rutland Militia. He served with the Regiment in South Africa from February until October 1879 during the Zulu War (entitled to Medal with clasp 1879), and it is therefore possible that he took part in the charge at the Battle of Ulundi, 4 July 1879. He was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, together with a gratuity, on 27 July 1884, and was finally discharged at Colchester on 10 October 1906, after 40 years and 228 days’ service. Admitted as an in-Pensioner at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, he died in September 1913, and is buried in Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey.
