David Liddle joined the Metropolitan Police on 9 July 1888, and served with “F” (Paddington) Division. He was subsequently promoted to Police Sergeant in the Commissioner’s Office, New Scotland Yard. As a member of the Criminal Investigation Department, he was on duty with Special Branch in a protective role at the Coronation of Edward VII on 9 August 1902, and subsequently accompanied the King and Queen on their Majesties’ visit to Scotland on 11 May 1903. They left by Royal Train from London King’s Cross Station, and returned home to London on 15 May. He was subsequently one of the very few Metropolitan Policemen to receive the Scottish Police Medal. His widow received a gratuity of £62, 8s. 10d.
