James Robertson was born at Wallsend, Northumberland, on 19 October 1900, and joined the Royal Navy on 17 May 1916, serving as a Boy Second Class at H.M.S. Ganges. He served during the Great War in H.M.S. Iron Duke from 30 April 1917, and was promoted Able Seaman on 19 October 1918.
