Alfred Reynolds was born in Birmingham in 1889, and attested for the Coldstream Guards on 10 July 1905. He served with the Regiment in Egypt and the Sudan from 16 January 1908, returning to the United Kingdom on 23 March 1911. He went with the Regiment to France on 12 August 1914, and suffered a gunshot wound which fractured his shoulder blade at the Battle of Le Cateau during the retreat from Mons on 26 August 1914. Taken Prisoner of War on the same day, he was held at a Prisoner of War Camp at Hamelin for the remainder of the War, finally being repatriated in 1919.
