W. Holt sailed for South Africa with the King’s Royal Rifle Corps on 18th December 1899, and landed in Durban on 1 January 1900. He first saw action against the Boers near Colenso on 5 February: ‘Got under fire for the first time, a few bullets whistling about us...’ (Recipient’s diary refers).
