Robert Langstaff was born in the Parish of Calabeck, Cumberland, and attested for Royal Engineers at Carlisle, in November 1856. He advanced to 2nd Corporal in July 1858, and to Sergeant in December 1868. He served with the Corps in Abyssinia (entitled to medal), and was discharged 15 January 1878, having served 21 years and 73 days.
