George Cade was born in Buckinghamshire, and attested for the 14th Light Dragoons in April 1841. He served with the Regiment during the Punjab campaign 1848-49 (entitled to medal with ‘Chilianwala’ and ‘Goojerat’ clasps), the Persia campaign 1857, and during the Indian Mutiny 1857-59 (entitled to medal with ‘Central India’ clasp). His service papers give the following, ‘During that period at the battle of Koouch on the 7th May 1858, his horse fell on him by which he has fractured... to the right side of jaw, losing nearly all teeth on that side.... again at Gwalior while in pursuit... a horse again fell on him.’

Cade volunteered to join the 2nd Bengal European Light Cavalry, 1 May 1859, and transferred as Corporal to the 20th Hussars in February 1861. He was discharged 5 July 1864, having served 23 years (22 of which were in India) and 82 days (entitled to L.S. & G.C.).
