Matthew Kelly was born in Crane and attested for the 70th (Surrey) Regiment on 23 March 1853. He proceeded to New Zealand from Calcutta on the Louisa in May 1861, and saw action with the Regiment in Taranaki before Waikato in 1863-64. he was discharged in New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand on 24 March 1865, and settled near Auckland. He died in Clevedon, New Zealand in 1906.
