Military General Service 1793-1814, 1 clasp, Toulouse (H. S. Northcote, Lieut. 4th. Dgns.), with top silver riband buckle, nearly extremely fine £2200-2600

Provenance: Sold by order of the recipient’s family.

Hugh Stafford Northcote was born on 22 December 1793, at Upton Pyne, Devon, the son of Sir Stafford Henry Northcote, 7th Baronet. He was appointed Cornet by purchase in the 4th Dragoons on 4 June 1812, and promoted to Lieutenant on 18 March 1813, again by purchase. He served with the 4th Dragoons in the Peninsula from September 1813 to April 1814 and was present at the battle of Toulouse.

He was promoted to Captain on the half-pay in the 8th Light Dragoons in July 1815, and exchanged into the 1st Dragoons Guards in February 1818, subsequently rising to the rank of Major. He died on 19 February 1880, aged 86.
