The Durham Light Infantry, 1st Volunteer Battalion Officer’s Green Cloth Helmet c. 1883-1901, a good quality example, the green cloth covered body complete with all plated fittings, the front plate being a crowned eight pointed star with laurel and Garter overlays, in the centre on a ground of dark green velvet a strung bugle horn, title scrolls below ‘The Durham Light Infantry’ and ‘1st Volunteer Battalion’, leather sweat band with attached pink silk lining, retailed by Gardiner & Co., Queen Victoria St., London, the plate original to the helmet, together with a head and shoulders photograph of the original owner named on the reverse ‘E.Tomkins’ wearing the helmet, scarlet frock, white shoulder belt and rank stars for a Captain of the period, the plated chin chain lacking leather and velvet lining, three small moth holes to the body of the helmet at the rear otherwise very good condition (2) £600-800
