Samuel Piert served as Sergeant with the 1st European Bengal Fusiliers during the Indian Mutiny, and was killed in action at Delhi, 14 September 1857. He was buried under the memorial erected at the Sadr Bazar, Delhi, to the men of the Regiment who were ‘killed in the attack on the enemy’s fortified position of Kissengunge on the morning of the successful assault and storm of Delhi.’
