Edwin Thomas was commissioned Ensign in 1839, and served as Lieutenant in the 70th Native Infantry as part of the Army of Gwalior in 1842. He was present at Maharajpore (entitled to Star), and served in the Punjab Campaign of 1848-49. During the latter he was present at the actions of Ramnuggurr, the passage of Chenab, Chillianwallah, Goojerat, and the pursuit of the Sikhs and Afghans to Peshawur (entitled to Punjab Medals with 2 clasps).

Thomas advanced to Captain in October 1854, and served with the 3rd Bengal European Regiment during the Indian Mutiny. He served under General Wyndham at Cawnpore, and was present at the attack by the Gwalior Troops, and the final defeat of the Force under Lord Clyde (2 and 6 December 1857). Thomas advanced to Lieutenant-Colonel, and died at Lucknow in October 1869.
