Henry Nicoll was commissioned Ensign, 50th Native Infantry, in December 1834. He served as a Lieutenant in Bundlecund in 1842, and in the Gwalior Campaign 1842-43. Nicoll served during the Punjab Campaign 1848-49, advanced to Captain, and served in the Sonthal Campaign 1855-56. He served as Brigade Major with the Delhi Field Force in 1857, and was present at the action of Badlee-ka-Serai and at the taking of the heights before Delhi (Mentioned in the Despatch of Brigadier Graves, 8 June 1857).

Nicoll served as Brigade Major throughout the siege of Delhi, and at the assault and final capture (Mentioned in the Despatch of Brigadier Longfield; and Brevet Major). He was promoted Colonel, Bengal Staff Corps, in 1866, and advanced to General in 1889. Nicoll died in Sidlington, February 1907 (despite this he was gazetted for the award of a C.B. in the Indian Mutiny Jubilee Honours List, 28 June 1907).
