S. Hunt attested for the 8th Hussars on 25 May 1940, and was posted to 55 Training Regiment. He served with the 8th Hussars in North Africa during the Second World War, and was reported missing on 20 June 1942. Taken Prisoner of War, he was held first at Campo 54, situated at Fara-in-Sabina, about 30 miles north-east of Rome, and then subsequently at Stalag 344, situated at Lamsdorf, until it joined the ‘death march’ to Gorlitz on 30 January 1945.

Returning to the U.K. in September 1945, he was posted to the Yorkshire Hussars on 29 November of that year, before re-joining the 8th Hussars for overseas service in Korea on 26 August 1950. He landed in Korea on 14 November 1950, and transferred to Class ‘Z’ Reserve on 22 November 1951.
