Five: Flight Sergeant R. T. Waker, Royal Australian Air Force, killed in action when his Stirling was shot down by a night-fighter over Denmark, 23 April 1944

Raymond Thomas Walker was born at Sheffield, Yorkshire, on 6 December 1918, and enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force at Melbourne, Victoria, on 31 January 1942. He served as a Wireless Operator and Air Gunner in No. 623 Squadron (Stirlings), based at R.A.F. Downham Market, from 12 November 1943, transferring to No. 149 Squadron (Stirlings), based at R.A.F. Mildenhall, on 6 December 1943, on his former Squadron’s disbandment. He was killed in action when his plane was shot down by a night-fighter over Ollerup, Denmark, at 23:20 hours on 23 April 1944, when returning from a Gardening operation over Europe, and he is buried alongside the rest of his crew in Svendborg General Cemetery, Denmark.
