Four: Officer’s Cook 2nd Class A. F. Quarrel, Royal Navy, killed in action off the Hook of Holland in H.M.S. Wivern, 14 May 1940

Alfred Frank Quarrel was born at Wimborne, Dorset, on 7 April 1905, and joined the Royal Navy as an Officer’s Cook on 18 September 1923. He was awarded his Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 9 September 1938. He served during the Second World War in H.M.S. Wivern, and was killed in action on 15 May 1940, during Operation Ordnance, when the Wivern was involved in the evacuation of troops from the Hook of Holland and was damaged by the near miss of two air bombs leading to 2 officers and 25 ratings killed. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
