Joseph Brent Taylor was born in Plymouth, Devon, in 1862, and received his Master’s Certificate in 1889. Appointed to the command of the S.S. Dido on 9 February 1916, she was mined whilst at anchor off the Spurn Lightship at the mouth of the River Humber, and sank on 26 February 1916 with the loss of 28 lives, with only 3 of her crew surviving. His body was washed ashore on 29 February 1916, and he is buried in Hull. His medals were finally issued to his next of kin in November 1944.

Sold together with a large quantity of copied research.

Samuel B. Alcock was born in 1879 and attested for the Royal Flying Corps on 15 August 1916, having previously served in the 7th (Territorial) Battalion, Manchester Regiment from October 1905. He served during the Great War on the Western Front with No. 17 Squadron from 7 August 1917, and transferred into the Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918. He transferred to the reserve on 13 June 1919, and was discharged on 30 April 1920.

Sold together with two Royal Air Force Athletic and Cross Country Association Medallions, one silvered-bronze, the other bronze, both unnamed.
