Gordon Alfred Stewart served during the Second World War with No. 203 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was commissioned from the ranks Pilot Officer on 28 August 1944, and was promoted Flying Officer on 28 February 1945. On 2 October 1945, he was the captain and pilot of a Liberator which was detailed to undertake a transit flight from Singapore to the Great Nicobar Islands. No signals were received after take-off, and it is believed that the aircraft crashed into the Bay of Bengal. Stewart is commemorated along with his crew on the Singapore Memorial. His wife, Gladys Ivy Irene Stewart, subsequently re-married Sergeant E. G. Ford.
