George Borthwick was born at Newngham, Midlothian, Scotland, and attested for the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders at Edinburgh. He served with the 12th Battalion during the Great War and died at Salonika on 3 October 1918. He is buried in Kirechkoi-Hortakoi Military Cemetery, Greece.

William Borthwick, the younger brother of George Borthwick, was born at Edinburgh and attested for the Royal Scots Fusiliers at Edinburgh. He served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War and died on the Western Front on 30 July 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
